Dear Diary

My Favorite Country

by Kyra Miller 19 Aug 2023 0 Comments

Kyra, what's your favorite country? I get asked this every time I tell someone how much I have traveled.Β

If the answer wasn't already obvious it is JAPAN!Β πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅

I've spent about 8 years of my life in Japan and haven't even scratched the surface of seeing this country. So, let's get into it!

Culture & Technology: Japan has had the ultimate culture shock for me. From its advanced technology to their everyday way of life. There is no other country like it. I remember back in the 2007-2008 time frame, I was first introduced to Wii's, Automated Drink Machines, and Heated Toilets. These are all things that began to become more recognizable in the United States a few years later. However, there is one thing that I have seen in Japan, that has not made its' way to the United States yet. It's a combination of technology implemented into restaurants. You start with checking in with a host, that just so happens to be a robot. After sitting, you are then given a chance to look at the menu. Ready to order? No problem! Simply just press the button on the table and your server will come right to you. Need something else? Just press the button when you are ready! Ready to pay? Pay on the screen located on your table! Such a simple concept, however it makes dining out a seamless experience. Another cool thing they do is bring out your food when it's ready. I was confused at first because, in America, they bring it out when everyone's food is ready. But no, not in Japan! They want you to eat your food when it's hot.Β

Food: Japanese people can make any cuisine and make it delicious! But the hot topic is Sushi! Living in Japan has made me super picky when it comes to where I orderΒ my sushi. Some of my favorite food spots that aren't sushi in Japan are Pepper Lunch and Coco's Curry.Β

People: Japanese people are the sweetest people, ever! I've never had a bad interaction while in Japan. Now, if you are an African American woman traveling there (especially with braids), some people might be super fascinated with you. Some might think you are a celebrity and want to take pictures with you! But don't worry, it is not every dayΒ that they see melanatedΒ skin.

Things to do & Nightlife: I can't give y'all ALL the sauce! You'll have to purchase a city guide to learn more about Japan from my perspective.Β
